Breakfast vs. Brunch: What's the Difference?

Snooze, an A.M. Eatery serves classic American breakfast plates, omelets, pancakes, French toast, Eggs Benedict, breakfast burritos, hashes, lighter breakfast choices, plant-based options and brunch cocktails. The menu also includes a Lunch Bunch section with burgers, sandwiches, salads and soup.

That range helps explain the difference between breakfast and brunch.

Breakfast is the first meal of the day and is generally eaten earlier. Brunch is served later and combines breakfast and lunch, which is why pancakes and eggs can share a menu with burgers, salads and cocktails.

There is no official time when breakfast becomes brunch, and many dishes work for either meal.

Classic Breakfast Choices

A traditional American breakfast often starts with eggs, breakfast meat, potatoes and toast.

The Snooze Classic follows that format with three cage-free eggs prepared to order, a choice of breakfast meat, hash browns and toast.

Snooze also offers several omelets. The Denver Omelet combines ham, onions, red bell peppers and cheddar. The Protein Trio Omelet includes bacon, Polidori sausage, ham and cheddar, while the Garden Harvest Omelet uses asparagus, mushrooms, onions, zucchini and red bell peppers with chili-lime avocado and herbed cream cheese.

The Sandwich I Am combines scrambled eggs, cheddar and a Polidori breakfast sausage patty with smoked cheddar hollandaise.

These are traditional breakfast dishes regardless of whether they are ordered early in the morning or closer to noon.

Pancakes and French Toast

Pancakes and French toast are common at both breakfast and brunch.

Snooze serves Buttermilk Pancakes with Vermont maple syrup along with several flavored versions.

Strawberry Shortcake Pancakes include strawberry coulis, vanilla cream, strawberry mascarpone, almond streusel and fresh strawberries. Pineapple Upside Down Pancakes add caramelized pineapple, vanilla cream and cinnamon butter.

The vegan Banana Bliss Pancakes are made with coconut and almond milks, banana and vanilla and topped with fresh strawberries and blueberries.

The Pancake Flight lets you choose three pancake flavors in one order.

French toast options include French Toast Neat, made with brioche, whipped mascarpone, seasonal fruit and maple syrup, and OMG! French Toast, made with thick-cut brioche stuffed with whipped mascarpone and topped with vanilla cream, caramel, strawberries and toasted coconut.

Eggs Benedict and Snooze Bennys

Eggs Benedict is especially common on brunch menus.

A traditional Eggs Benedict combines poached eggs, an English muffin, meat and hollandaise sauce. Snooze calls its versions Bennys.

The Ham Benedict III includes shaved ham and poached eggs on a toasted English muffin with smoked cheddar hollandaise.

The Smashed Avocado Benny uses a crispy Parmesan English muffin with smashed avocado, seasoned tomatoes, poached eggs and smoked cheddar hollandaise.

The Smoked Salmon Benny combines toasted focaccia, herbed cream cheese, smoked salmon and poached eggs with cream cheese hollandaise, pickled red onions and lemon olive gremolata.

The Benny Duo lets diners choose half-orders of two different Benedicts.

Breakfast Burritos, Tacos and Hashes

Breakfast burritos and hashes use familiar breakfast ingredients in more substantial dishes.

The Smothered Breakfast Burrito combines black beans, hash browns, scrambled eggs, onions, poblanos and cheddar-Jack cheese inside a flour tortilla, topped with red and green chile and lime crema.

The Crispy Breakfast Burrito includes scrambled eggs, hash browns, black beans, jalapeño avocado salsa and cheese in a tortilla griddled until crisp.

Breakfast Tacos come on corn tortillas with scrambled eggs, cheddar-Jack cheese, onions and poblanos, with pico de gallo, jalapeño avocado salsa and hash browns.

Spuds Deluxe combines hash browns, cheddar and Jack cheeses, scallions and eggs. Corned Beef Hash adds grass-fed corned beef, onions and poblanos.

These dishes can serve as breakfast or as a larger late-morning brunch.

Savory Brunch Choices

Brunch menus also make room for dishes that go beyond traditional eggs, pancakes and toast.

The Habanero Pork Belly Breakfast Fried Rice combines jasmine-garlic fried rice, peppers, onions, poblanos, carrots and pineapple with braised habanero pork belly and sunny-side up eggs.

Shrimp & Grits includes cheesy grits, Cajun-spiced shrimp, andouille sausage, peppers, onions and a sunny-side up egg.

Biscuits & Gravy pairs a toasted biscuit with house-made rosemary sausage gravy and two sunny-side up eggs.

These dishes use breakfast ingredients but are substantial enough to overlap with lunch.

Lighter and Plant-Based Breakfast Options

Snooze also has a dedicated Lighter Fare section.

Bravocado Toast combines smashed avocado, red onion honey jam and roasted tomato on rustic bread with two sunny-side up eggs and dressed greens.

The Protein & Veggie Egg White Scramble includes asparagus, mushrooms, onions, red bell peppers and spinach with avocado and chicken sausage.

Purely Berries & Oats combines steel-cut oats, fresh berries and granola.

The Sweet Potato Veggie Smash Up includes griddled sweet potato, asparagus, mushrooms, onions, avocado and a poached egg.

Plant-based choices include vegan Banana Bliss Pancakes, along with tofu and plant-based chorizo available as add-ons.

Lunch at Snooze

The lunch side of brunch becomes clearer in Snooze's Lunch Bunch section.

The Smash Hit Burger is a Wagyu smash burger with cheddar, lettuce, tomato and spicy bacon Thousand Island dressing.

The Rachel combines turkey, Swiss, slaw and spicy bacon Thousand Island dressing.

The Cobb Salad includes romaine, habanero pork belly, hard-boiled egg, tomatoes, pickled red onion, avocado and pepitas with herb buttermilk dressing.

Grilled 3-Cheese & Roasted Tomato Soup pairs cheddar, Jack and Swiss on grilled rustic bread with roasted tomato soup.

This lets one person order pancakes or a Benny while someone else orders a burger, sandwich or salad.

Brunch Drinks

Coffee, tea and juice work for breakfast or brunch. Brunch menus are also more likely to include cocktails.

Snooze serves a classic Mimosa and a Build Your Own Mimosa with orange, grapefruit, pineapple, apple or cranberry juice.

The menu also includes Bloody Marys, sparkling cocktails and drinks such as the Morning Marg.

Breakfast vs. Brunch at Snooze

Breakfast generally happens earlier and centers on traditional morning foods. Brunch happens later and expands the menu to include breakfast dishes, lunch choices and cocktails.

At Snooze, that means you can order a Snooze Classic, omelet, Pancake Flight, French toast, Benny, breakfast burrito, breakfast tacos or lighter breakfast choice. The menu also includes shrimp and grits, breakfast fried rice, burgers, sandwiches, salads and soup when you want something closer to lunch.

The difference between breakfast and brunch is mostly timing and range. The food overlaps considerably.
